Life Takes Place Trailer
What do we see when we open a retirement community through the eyes of artists?
Architecture, light, and the relationships between people. The everyday moments that unfold in rooms, corridors, and public spaces form concrete and richly textured worlds of living.
Beginning in June 2026, twelve artists and artist groups from around the world entered Taikang Homes communities across multiple Chinese cities, as well as Taikang’s headquarters, for residencies. Drawing on their individual observations and experiences, they re-examine these buildings and the lives unfolding within them.
On the occasion of Taikang’s 30th anniversary, Taikang Art Museum hopes that this series of works will place Taikang’s long-standing architectural practice within a broader humanistic perspective.
Within architecture are individual people and countless everyday moments.
In an increasingly long-lived society, age can be quantified, yet life cannot be reduced to a single experience. What kind of living environments do we need? And how do we understand individual autonomy, interdependence, and care?
For a museum, the question of how art can help us understand the reality we inhabit remains one worth asking again and again.
