In today’s image-saturated culture, where judgement is made at an ever-increasing speed, we have grown accustomed to arriving at conclusions almost instantly. Whether a painting is considered “good” often seems to rest on a set of familiar criteria: the strength of its technique, the coherence of its concept, the persuasiveness of its realism, or its ability to leave a lasting impression amid the endless flow of images.
Yet when we stand before a painting, the question proves far more complex. In Liu Xiaodong’s work especially, a painting is never simply a finished result waiting to be evaluated. It is a site where pigment, stretcher, canvas, and bodily labour come together, while simultaneously holding in tension the relationships between lived reality, personal experience, and the viewer. How, then, should we speak about what makes a painting “good”? Is being “well painted” really enough to define its artistic value?
Presented in conjunction with Liu Xiaodong: East of the River, West of the River, this live debate brings together undergraduate students from the School of Arts Management and Education at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Taking “Is Technical Mastery the True Measure of a Great Painting?” as their proposition, they will reconsider what constitutes a “good painting” through the lenses of painterly language, viewing experience, and the contemporary cultural context.
More than a contest of opposing viewpoints, this debate is also an exercise in looking. By setting aside our well-rehearsed habits of evaluation, we may find a way to return to painting itself—and, through discussion, rediscover why it continues to deserve sustained attention.
In this debate, we will explore:
💬 How Judgement Is Formed
When “well painted” becomes an almost automatic compliment, do we overlook the standards, experiences, and positions that shape our judgement?
💬 The Complexity of Painting
Technique, concept, realism, visual impact… Are these familiar criteria sufficient to account for the value of a painting?
💬 Learning to Look
Beyond opposing arguments, this event seeks to transform debate into an opportunity to relearn how we look at painting.
